The STRATHcube Team

Get to know the people behind our flagship project, STRATHcube, a CubeSat that encourages the sustainable usage of space.

2021-22: Group Project

Ewan Leitch

Systems Engineering

As Systems Engineer of the STRATHcube, Ewan aims to design an effective structure for the progression and advancement of the project, while ensuring that our designs are within alignment with the constrictions outlined by the likes of the ESA:FYS! Programme with the ambition of hopefully seeing the satellite launched one day!

Lewis Gray

Mission Analysis | AOCS

Lewis’ role in the STRATHcube team will be the AOCS and orbit propagation simulation analyst. From previously developing a keen interest to space over a summer internship, he thought what better way to develop his understanding more by doing a masters project related to space. Lewis finds the prospect of helping to develop an ambitious final year project exciting!

David Polley

Structures

David is currently working on structures and deployable mechanisms. Having completed a dissertation heavily involving modelling and using engineering simulation software such as ANSYS, he is keen to put that experience to use in the STRATHcube project.

Andrew Gibb

Thermal | AOCS

Within the STRATHcube team Andrew is working on the attitude determination and control system (ADCS) as well as the thermal systems. He is building high-fidelity simulations of both systems to help build an integrated system model of the CubeSat with Lewis and Iain.

David Peacock

Power | Telecommunications

Having previously worked on IGLUNA competition as a part of StrathAIS designing a lunar habitat, this year David joins the STRATHcube team primarily working on the power subsystem but also helping develope the telecommunications subsystem. He is excited to carry on from the work carried out last year and further these subsytems.

2021-22: Dissertations

Iain Hall

Mission Analysis

Iain is developing an integrated simulation of the sub-system models to aid in analysing the satellite design.

Maria Nepheli Kardassi

Secondary Payload

Nepheli is developing the secondary payload by determining the range of altitude at which solar panels break off during re-entry, and proposing a break-switch locking mechanism that can withstand the aerothermal effects of re-entry until the expected demise altitude.

2020-21: Group Project

Ciarán Jenkins

Systems Engineering | Mission Analysis

Ciarán serves as the lead systems engineer and mission analyst on the STRATHcube technical team. As the Founder and President of StrathAIS, Ciarán tries to stay up-to-date with all goings-on in the society and aims to give every StrathAIS team whatever they need to succeed in their projects.

Lewis Creed

Primary Payload | Telecommunications

Lewis heads up the primary payload and telecommunications subsystems on the STRATHcube project. His undergraduate dissertation on the topic of space debris mitigation left him wanting to get involved with a space related project like STRATHcube. Being a member of the STRATHcube team gives Lewis the opportunity to work on an exciting initiative that is different from conventional final year projects.

Julie Graham

Secondary Payload

Having carried out research in satellite re-entry analysis tools throughout her undergraduate studies, Julie’s role in the STRATHcube team is primarily the development of our secondary payload to better understand the re-entry environment. Through these endeavours, she has become a passionate advocate for the sustainable usage of space, as well as making this topic accessible for all who are interested.

Gary Stewart

Propulsion | ADCS

Gary joined the STRATHcube project after spending the previous year researching the application of electric propulsion for the mitigation of space debris for his undergraduate degree. His time on the STRATHcube has been split between conducting a feasibility study on propulsion, while also heading up the design of the attitude determination and control system (ADCS).

Douglas McGarrity

Power | Thermal Management

Having previously worked on the AIAA “Lunar Base Camp” competition in 2019/20, this year Douglas is working on the society’s flagship project, STRATHcube. Within the CubeSat team Douglas manages the power systems, thermal control and on-board data handling subsystems.

Sam Kirk

Structures | Systems Engineer

Sam primarily works on Structures, Mechanisms and Configuration and is the secondary Systems Engineer for the project. He has been involved with StrathAIS since its creation, and is excited to be a part of the society's flagship project, STRATHcube.
