About Us
The Strathclyde Aerospace Innovation Society is the University of Strathclyde’s largest aerospace society. Our mission is to act as a platform for students to grow as engineers and leaders through participating in our large-scale extracurricular projects in rocketry, space systems, and aviation. With over 100 new member signups last year, our members represent some of the university's most dedicated and enthusiastic students. The society has entered twelve world-renowned competitions over the past four years in a wide multidisciplinary range of topics.
StrathAIS has continued to become a known organisation in the Scottish space sector for our ambitious achievements. One of our main goals is to act as a bridge between students and industry, with several members attaining internships at aerospace engineering companies. As we continue to grow, we hope to gain more support from external companies to support us in the long term and maximise the potential of our members to and allow them to develop into engineering leaders.
Our History
2019
StrathAIS was founded in 2019 to fufill the need of an aerospace society within the univeristy and give students the opportunity to develop skills within the aerospace field.
Various theoretical Competitions were entered such as, the AIAA Space systems 2020 which involved designing a Lunar Base, the AIAA Aircraft Design 2020 where a High-Capacity Short Range Transport Aircraft was designed and the ACE/ESA Student Challenge for a sub-orbital spacecraft.
2020
The STRATHcube Team division was created in 2020 to provide a more practical and exciting project for members to work on a CubeSat, it became the flagship project of StrathAIS after its integration as a Master’s Project marking the first major milestone for the society.
Further Competitions were also entered such as, the UKSEDS Satellite Design where a Lunar Nanosatellite Mission was designed, the Dassault Systems Sustainable Aviation in which an Autonomous Drone For Organ Transportation was developed.
2021
The 2021/22 academic year marked the next major milestone as the Rocketry Team division was created and entered the Spaceport America Cup 2022, this involved developing and launching a rocket capable of reaching 10,000 ft, the MK. I.
STRATHcube also entered into its second year of development of the CubeSat along with continuing the UKSEDS Satellite Design Competition to design and build a 3U CubeSat.
2022
The 2022/23 academic year was a resounding success for all teams. The Rocketry Team entered again into the Spaceport America Cup 2023 breaking several of our previous records for accuracy, performance and recovery of MK. II.
The STRATHcube Team saw significant progress with the highlight of the development of an Intergrated Systems Tool which simulated the mission on MATLAB. A seperate team was also created which would develop a prototype CubeSat to emulate the payload of the Rocketry Teams Rocket.
2023
2024
The 2023/24 academic year was yet again another outstanding success. The Rocketry Team entered the Spaceport America Cup 2024 launching the MK. III 10,000 ft resulting in our best result so far of 18th out of 120 international teams and top 10 in our category.
The STRATHcube team further progressed towards their Critical Design Review Stage and begun development of prototype CubeSats for testing and analysis.
